Just like there are operations you need to do after formatting a computer, there are operations to be done after WordPress installation. I get a lot of questions about this topic, so I wanted to share it.

Actions to be taken after WordPress installation

Actions to be Taken After WordPress Installation 1 -Site title, slogan, time zone and favicon changes

Whether you install your WordPress site with a ready-made server program like Fantastico or manually, you need to edit the site title and slogan after the first installation. This process is very important both in terms of SEO and for visitors to your site to be able to recognize your site between tabs. In order to perform the operation, you need to click on the Settings –> General link and then fill in the fields as in the photo below.

Your site’s time zone may vary depending on the country where your server is located. This will cause the hours of the content you enter to be different. In order to resolve this difference, click on the Settings –> General link and then press +2 or +3 depending on the country where your server is located, which will help you find the correct time.

For information about Favicon here, and you can access the article I wrote about how to add it from here.

Actions to be Done After WordPress Installation 2 – Changing permalink settings

One of the indispensable points in terms of SEO is the permalink settings that ensure that the content you add appears in the browser address bar. After WordPress installation, it uses the URL /?p=234. Instead of this URL structure, you need to use a structure that shows the name of your post. To do this, simply click on the General –> Permanent links link and then select the Post name from the general settings section. I also recommend that you fill in the category and tag basis fields in this section.

Things to Do After WordPress Installation 3 – Deleting unused themes

After WordPress installation, it automatically includes its official themes into your system. If you are not using these themes, I recommend you delete them. In this way, you will be saved from unnecessary updates and the space they will take up. To do this, you need to click on the theme you are not using from the Appearance –> Themes link, click on the theme details, and then click on the delete link at the bottom right of the window that opens.

What to Do After WordPress Installation 4 – Installing a performance-enhancing compression plugin

One of the most important points that Google looks at when determining the SEO score is whether the site uses the compression structure. For this compression process, we can create SEO-friendly pages with support from various plugins. One of the plugins is W3 Total Cache

I recommend this process for advanced WordPress users. The reason for this is the settings that need to be made at many points, including the WordPress main files, after installing the plugin. If you don’t want to make your site unusable, do not approach this plugin without knowing what you are doing 🙂

5 – Security plugins and Akismet

There are many plugins that claim to increase the security of your WordPress panel. But I think the healthiest and most useful plugin among them is iThemes Security (formerly Better WP Security)

Actions to be Performed After WordPress Installation

After activating this plug-in, it even tells you the actions you need to take, the security vulnerabilities of your system and how to close them.

Akismet is our only and indisputable assistant to protect the content you enter from spam comments. This plugin is automatically included in our system after WordPress installation. All you have to do is activate it and enter your Akismet key, which you will receive for free. To do this, activate the Akismet plugin from the Plugins link. This way, you protect your site from spam comments.

6 – Must-have SEO plugin

There are dozens of steps you need to take to ensure that your site is easily found by search engines. The best helper I recommend to help you perform these operations is the WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast plugin.

In addition to being free, it offers help in a language that even someone who has never dealt with SEO operations can understand. So is it enough on its own? Of course not. For this, you may need to get professional help at some points.
